I've never opened a lithium cell that has an internal short circuit before, so I thought it would be quite interesting to do. It was also a good opportunity to see how they jam so much chemistry into the standard 18650 package. If this is how stuffed a 2200mAh cell is then it shows why the 3000mAh cells are so expensive. There must be a lot of work in jamming even more chemistry in, and it shows how safety could be compromised by pushing everything to the edge to make it fit. Lithium ion batteries do not contain lithium metal (just lithium ions) and other pure metal lithium batteries often contain incredibly toxic electrolyte that make them too dangerous for the average person to safely open. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thoisoi2 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Thoisoi?ty=h Music: http://audiomicro.com Interesting chemical experiments: http://www.m.chemicum.com/ So today, I will tell you about the lightest metal on Earth - Lithium. Lithium is in the first group in the periodic table of chemical elements. Except for the smallest atomic mass, lithium has the lowest density of all metals, which is nearly 2 times lower than that of water. In appearance, lithium represents a shiny metal, which can be cut with a knife, but it would be required to exert sufficient force to achieve that. Lithium rapidly oxidizes in air, and while that is happening it’s being covered with a layer of oxides, carbonates, and lithium nitride black coating because this is the only metal that can react with atmospheric nitrogen at room temperature. Lithium can be stored in kerosene, however, due to its low density it will float on its surface. Now shall we look at some of the chemical properties of lithium. A piece of lithium reacts rather calmly with water, forming hydrogen and lithium hydroxide. If you ignite the released hydrogen, the flames will turn beautifully red, due to lithium ions. However, if we take lithium in the shape of thin lithium foil, which is used in lithium batteries btw, that will ignite and explode upon reaction with water, which is very dangerous. If you set fire to a little piece of lithium, it will melt, and then light up with are very bright white flame to then form lithium oxide during combustion. The temperature of burning Lithium in the air is more than 2,300 degrees Celsius. It is surprising, however, that when it’s melted at temperature above 300 degrees Celsius, lithium practically doesn’t oxidize by the air and its surface remains glossy. Li, as well as all other alkali metals, is an excellent reducing agent that easily loses electrons. If you ignite lithium on sand, it will react with the silica, that the sand consists of, forming an amorphous silicon. In addition, lithium reacts perfectly with sulfur. This reaction of lithium with sulfur formed so much energy that even our can melted, on which the reaction was carried. And yes, I have also burned through the carpet with this reaction, but that's alright, I have many carpets. The other very dangerous lithium property is that when it starts to burn while being on wood, it will pick up oxygen from the cellulose molecules that make up the aforementioned wood. As such lithium explodes, creating a lot of hot sparks. Do NOT try to repeat the experiment! Similarly, lithium can react with dry copper sulfate, recovering copper from its salt. These days Lithium finds many applications in science and technology. The most common use of it, of course, would be lithium-ion batteries and other power sources. Also, lithium is used in nuclear power, lasers, as well as metallurgy. Lithium compounds are used in medicine for the treatment of mental disorders; because of its ability to be an antagonist of sodium ions. I hope you enjoyed the video! Here is a link to test your knowledge: http://empowern.com/2015/08/bipolar-medication-lithium/ Lithium belongs to the drug class: antimanic agents and it is sold under the US brand names: Lithobid, Eskalith, Eskalith-CR. More than 5.7 million American adults or 2.6 percent of the population age 18 or older in any given year have bipolar disorder. Lithium is helping some of this American. It has become one of the first and widely used psychiatric drugs for the treatment of bipolar disorder in the United States, since its approval in the 1970s. It also has become one of the most studied psychiatric medications. Indication: Lithium is an effective drug for bipolar disorder as its properties help to prevent, as well as stabilize, manic-depressive mood swings that occur in this psychiatric condition. By controlling mood disorder, it also reduces the risk of suicide. This is an advantage of lithium that is lacking in some other drugs. But it is more effective in preventing depression than it is in preventing mania. However, it needs time to develop and reach its ideal therapeutic level in the body before it induces any effects. Usually it takes about 1-3 weeks, however, in the case of sudden or acute bipolar episodes, if lithium hasn’t reached its optimum level in the client’s body, it can be prescribed along with other medications for effectiveness. Lithium can also be prescribed for other psychiatric disorders besides bipolar disorder. It can be useful when other drugs fail in conditions such as schizophrenia, major depression, and certain psychiatric problems in children. Mechanism of Action: Although lithium had been used for more than 50 years in the treatment of bipolar disorder, its mechanism of action was unknown; until 1998. Scientists didn’t know the cause of mood swings in bipolar disorder either. A study made in 1998, by a group of researchers from Wisconsin University shed light on how lithium works and why it is effective. It was concluded that lithium acts on certain nerve cells in the brain and the receptors of the neurotransmitter glutamate. Lithium has a dual effect on these receptors, and using this, it helps to regulate the level of glutamate between cells, preventing it from reaching too high or too low concentrations. According to the director of this research, Dr. Lowell Hokin, who is also a school professor of pharmacology at Wisconsin University; too little glutamate between neurons cause depression, while excessive amounts of glutamate cause mania. But it is also believed that there are more causes and factors involved in these disorders besides the level of glutamate, but nevertheless, the study has been very helpful as it has uncovered the fundamental causes of bipolar disorder.

First I thought we should talk about where you can find lithium today. The truth is it’s likely on your body right now, you may be holding it in your hand, or you’re looking directly at it. But you might be surprised to know it’s also used in things like tools, aerospace equipment, military applications and backup storage for our Electric grid. And of course, Tesla’s and other electric cars // Looking to buy a Tesla S or X? Use our referral code and instantly receive $1,000 off and Free Supercharging! (limited) Get Started - https://teslanomics.co/td // It is so good for batteries that 39% of all Lithium production goes towards battery production. So what is Lithium anyway? Lithium itself is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. It is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. So this isn’t something you’d want just laying around your house. Especially if you have a toddler running around like I do... So Lithium is a metal so it must be mined right, like copper? Well, not exactly. It’s true lithium can be mined from rocks but mostly it’s found in brine pools. Lithium is also present in seawater but there aren’t any commercially viable methods of extracting it at this time As an aside when you see a meme floating around the internet showing a giant mine where lithium comes from, it’s a lie. As of 2017, most of the world's lithium production is in South America, where lithium-containing brine is extracted from underground pools and concentrated by solar evaporation. The standard extraction technique is to evaporate water from brine. Each batch takes from 18 to 24 months. With so much demand for lithium it’s a fair question to ask... Are Tesla and others doomed? Well…not really The US Geological Survey’s report for 2017 shows that "Worldwide lithium production increased by an estimated 12% in 2016 in response to increased lithium demand for battery applications. Production in Argentina increased nearly 60%, primarily owing to a new brine operation; the leading Argentine producer also increased production. A producer in Chile reported that its production rose by 20%. Two small Australian spodumene operations, one new and one inactive since 2013, planned to begin commercial concentrate production by year end. Worldwide lithium production capacity was reported to be 49,400 tons in 2015; capacity utilization was estimated to be 64% in 2015 and 71% in 2016. Based on average projections by producers and industry analysists of about 14% growth worldwide, consumption of lithium in 2016 is projected to be about 37,800 tons, up from 33,300 tons in 2015. So the trend is going up, but when you look at the overall picture you find that owing to continuing exploration, lithium resources have increased substantially worldwide. Identified lithium resources in the United States, from continental brines, geothermal brines, hectorite, oil field brines, and pegmatites, have been revised to 6.9 million tons. Identified lithium resources in other countries have been revised to approximately 40 million tons. Identified lithium resources in Argentina and Bolivia are about 9 million tons each and in major producing countries are Australia, more than 2 million tons; Chile, more than 7.5 million tons; and China, approximately 7 million tons. Canada’s lithium resources are about 2 million tons. Congo (Kinshasa), Russia, and Serbia have resources of about 1 million tons each. Lithium resources in Brazil and Mexico are approximately 200,000 tons each and Austria, and Zimbabwe have more than 100,000 tons each. Beyond just producing more lithium, companies like Tesla have focused on creating a closed-loop battery recycling program since as early as 2011. So while Tesla drivetrains are rated to go 1M miles, and the batteries will likely last to last north of 350K miles, once the cars do get turned in, Tesla isn’t going to just throw away those precious metals. If you’re an investor in companies reliant on lithium for their batteries such as Tesla, Apple, Google, or any other company making electronics today, you shouldn’t worry about the supply chain. We’ve got a long road ahead of us and probably by the time we need to worry about a shortage of Lithium we’ll have a new way to make batteries that are even better. // Join Our Community on Patreon! If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- http://www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm This also keeps the channel independent of YouTube's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

We show you how to get Lithium Metal from an Energizer Ultimate Lithium battery. Warning: This should be done outside or in a fumehood due to the toxic gases that may be formed under certain conditions. Gloves must be worn as the chemicals and lithium are corrosive. There are a great many types of lithium batteries and the particular chemistry of interest is "lithium iron disulfide" batteries which contain pure lithium metal and less toxic electrolyte than other batteries. Lithium ion batteries do not contain lithium metal (just lithium ions) and other pure metal lithium batteries often contain incredibly toxic electrolyte that make them too dangerous for the average person to safely open. It just so happens that the popular Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries are based on lithium iron disulfide chemistry making them the ideal choice for the home chemist to obtain lithium. The rolled lithium core is protected by a mini-fortress of steel that you have to cut through. The danger is accidentally shorting the battery and causing the internal materials to fuse. The video shows you what you have to go through and what to expect when opening an energizer ultimate lithium battery. Lithium is a powerful chemical reducing agent, it's also used for lithiation reactions in organic synthesis, batteries, unusual pyrotechnic formulations and some types of nuclear technologies. It's in the same category as the alkali metals which include the ever so popular sodium, potassium and cesium.

In this video you'll discover the nootropic benefits of Lithium Orotate. Including why we use Lithium Orotate as a nootropic, recommended dosage, side effects and clinical research. Lithium is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal that is so reactive, it sparks when it touches water. Cosmologists believe that lithium was one of the 3 elements synthesized in the Big Bang. So it's been around for a long time. In our modern society, this trace element retains a grim and undeserved reputation. Because it has been associated with treating serious mental issues like bipolar disorder and mania. But this psychotic medication that isn't even a true 'drug' is actually an essential trace mineral required to maintain optimal cognitive function. As a nootropic, micro-dosing with Lithium Orotate comes with a host of benefits. Lithium calms mania and mood swings by decreasing the sensitivity of norepinephrine receptors. It upregulates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), neurotrophin-3 (NT3) and their receptors. And lithium stimulates the proliferation of stem cells in the brain. All boosting neurogenesis and assisting in repair from all types of brain injury. Lithium also increases brain gray matter, increases DNA replication for neurogenesis, prevents apoptosis, increases N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA), inhibits beta-amyloid secretion and protects against damage once it’s formed, chelates aluminum, and protects against glutamate toxicity. Lithium Orotate recommended dose is 5 mg two or three times per day.
